As an elopement photographer who specializes in mountain elopements, hiking elopements, and National Park elopements, I’ve had the honor of capturing love stories in some of the most awe-inspiring places on earth—from alpine lakes to red rock canyons.
If you’re planning to say “I do” at elevation or under a blanket of stars, packing the right gear can make or break your day. Here’s the ultimate elopement packing list to keep your adventure stress-free, beautiful, and photo-ready.

Elopement Essentials (Don’t Leave These Behind!)
- Marriage license + IDs + Permits – Make sure you have your paperwork ready, especially if you’re eloping in a National Park where rangers may check.
- Rings – I always recommend couples double-check these the night before. If your ceremony location is close to a river or cliffside, I highly suggest buying fake rings for the ceremony, just in case they are dropped and never seen again.
- Vows – Printed or handwritten vows in nice-looking vow books are perfect for capturing emotional, intimate moments during your mountain elopement ceremony. Don’t read your vows off your cell phone or tablet, trust me, it will look like you’re checking your phone during your ceremony. Also, I don’t suggest speaking from the heart for your vows. Most people who do this will forget what they wanted to say, and they will end up rambling. Check out my blog post on how to write your vows for more help!

Elopement Attire for the Trail and the Ceremony
- Wedding dress or suit – Choose something that’s easy to move in for hiking elopements. Lightweight, wrinkle-resistant fabrics are your best friend.
- Comfortable shoes or hiking boots – Whether you’re trekking through Zion, Yosemite, or the Rockies, shoes that handle trails AND look good in photos are ideal.
- Layers – Mountain weather changes quickly. Pack a neutral-toned jacket or shawl that fits your elopement aesthetic.
- Backpack or daypack – Choose one that’s comfortable and spacious enough to carry the essentials (bonus points if it’s photogenic!).
Beauty Touch-Ups on the Go
- Mini makeup kit – Especially helpful after a sweaty hike or windy summit.
- Hair accessories – Think bobby pins, mini hair spray, or a bandana that suits the vibe of your outdoor elopement.
- Deodorant, blotting paper & toothbrush – Stay feeling and looking fresh from sunrise vows to sunset portraits.

Adventure-Ready Elopement Gear
For hiking elopements, here’s what I always recommend packing:
- Headlamp or flashlight – A must for sunrise or sunset hikes.
- Water bottle or hydration pack – Dehydration is a common issue at altitude.
- High-protein snacks – Think trail mix, energy bars, jerky.
- Trekking poles – If your route is steep or rugged.
- Bug spray & sunscreen – Essential for warm weather or forest elopements.

Photo-Friendly Extras That Elevate Your Gallery
As your photographer, I love when couples bring meaningful items that add story and aesthetic to their photos:
- Vow books – Beautiful details for flat lays and vow exchanges.
- Blanket or picnic setup – Cozy, romantic, and perfect for those just-married moments.
- Floral elements – A bouquet or boutonnière can transform your images (ask your florist for something hardy for outdoor conditions and won’t drop seeds).
- Champagne or a special drink – A celebratory toast makes for joyful, candid moments.
