Do we need a Permit to get married in Glacier National Park?

Yes, to legally have a wedding or commitment ceremony in Glacier National Park, you must apply for a Special Use Permit from the National Park Service. If you book me as your photographer, I will help walk you through the permit process!

Things to know about the permits

  • You must submit your application at least 30 days in advance. It’s best to apply as soon as you select your ceremony location & date
  • There is a non-refundable fee of $125. (as of 2024)
  • They allow weddings in 32 specific locations in the park. There is a limit of two permits per location per day.
  • Time limit is two hours for all locations.
  • Your permit does not grant access during road closures.
  • A permit monitor may be required for events over 20 people.
  • At all picnic areas: tables remain first-come, first-served and tables may not be saved/reserved or moved.

📌 Pro Tip: Some locations have restrictions on group size (typically 15–30 people max), so plan accordingly.

📸 Photography – Hire a professional photographer who knows the park and can capture its beauty at the best times of day.

🎤 Officiant – You’ll need a licensed officiant for a legal marriage. Some couples bring their own, while others have a friend or family member get ordained. If you hire me as your photographer, I can also be your officiant for a self-led ceremony.

🕰 TimingSunrise or sunset ceremonies offer the best lighting and fewer crowds. Weekdays are also quieter than weekends. Hire an experienced photographer who knows how to plan for proper lighting in mountainous areas.

🚙 TransportationGoing-to-the-Sun Road (which connects many ceremony spots) is only open from late June to mid-October depending on snowfall. Plan your wedding date accordingly! Glacier National Park also has a very strict vehicle reservation system. Hire a photographer that will help you with all the logistics for your wedding day.

🍽 Post-Ceremony Celebration – Nearby Whitefish and Columbia Falls offer charming restaurants, cozy lodges, and small wedding venues for a dinner or reception.
